This book was a departure from my usual genre, historical fiction, but I was ready for something different. I really liked the character development – throughout the entire book, I wasn’t sure if a couple of people, including the main character, Evie Porter was “good” or “bad”.

I also really appreciated that so much of the story line took place in small southern towns.  I am a small town girl, and I could really relate to the dynamics of the townspeople and popular local gathering places.

The biggest twist for me was that the main character’s identity was stolen by her boss, who transferred it to another spy for hire under his employment. She had worked carefully to preserve the identity, her real identity that she hoped to return to someday.

The main character, Evie, was clearly doing many illegal things as part of her job, even blackmailing some people and at times causing physical harm. The twist that kept me riveted was that I was 100% on her side.  She had a moral compass, despite being given a tough lot in life, and at times she created workarounds to spare her targets yet still achieve success on each job.

Overall, this book was a little bit thriller, little bit of mystery, some law enforcement procedural mixed in, with romance and female heroism.  This was very different from books I am normally drawn to and I loved it!
